Shyam Benegal Reveals the Truth About Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi’s Rivalry
Shyam Benegal recalls Smita Patil’s natural acting, her journey from a shy newcomer to a celebrated performer, her powerful roles in Mandi and Bhumika, and the truth behind reports of rivalry with Shabana Azmi.
Benegal said the camera itself seemed to be in love with Smita Patil, describing her extraordinary ability to look natural on screen. While the term “photogenic” is often used to describe certain people, he believed Patil possessed that quality to an exceptional degree. She could also express emotions with remarkable delicacy.
Benegal cast Patil in Charandas Chor, which was her first film. At the time, she appeared uncomfortable and inexperienced in front of the film unit. Before entering the film industry, she had rarely ventured outside her home. During shooting, she did not speak much to others and remained shy and reserved.
After returning to her room, she would write letters to her mother and often spend time in silence. However, Benegal explained that this was not her true personality. She was simply like that before becoming familiar with the people around her.
As she gradually developed friendships with the members of the unit, her personality began to emerge. Benegal recalled that she eventually became the source of energy at their gatherings and integrated herself into the film unit.
Rather than behaving like a conventional film star or leading actress, Patil worked alongside everyone as a member of the team. Her eyes were particularly expressive, allowing even the slightest emotion to come through on screen.
Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi’s Alleged Rivalry
There have long been claims that Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi shared a strained relationship. Benegal dismissed these reports, saying there was no truth to the suggestion that the two actresses were bitter rivals. According to him, the media had exaggerated the issue and created a narrative of intense competition between them.
Shabana Azmi appeared in Benegal’s first film, while Patil played the lead female character in her debut film. Reports frequently suggested that the two actresses were engaged in fierce professional competition, but Benegal maintained that the reality was different.
He believed Azmi, who had received formal acting training, may have appeared more confident in her abilities than Patil. Patil, by contrast, was a natural actress who had not undergone formal training. Benegal felt that she may have believed she was not as capable as Azmi because she lacked similar training, but he rejected that assessment.
In his view, both actresses were exceptionally talented performers.
Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi’s Memorable Performance in Mandi
Benegal described their collaboration in Mandi as a particularly rewarding experience. Both actresses worked together in the film, with Patil delivering a powerful performance.
In Mandi, Azmi’s character is portrayed as living under the protective shadow of the character played by Patil. Benegal noted that this relationship on screen also reflected their dynamic in real life.
He said he had made the film after drawing inspiration from a book. Patil played the character of a Marathi woman, and because she herself was Marathi, she brought considerable commitment to the role.
How Smita Patil Disappeared Into Her Characters
Benegal also recalled his experience working with Patil on Manthan. The film was shot in a village near Rajkot, in a distinctly rural setting.
During the shoot, he asked Patil to sit on the ground like the village girls rather than on a chair. People who came to watch the filming would ask where the heroine was, even though she was sitting right in front of them. They were unable to recognise her.
For Benegal, this demonstrated the extraordinary nature of her acting. She could blend so convincingly into her surroundings that people watching the shoot could not identify her as the film’s leading actress. Manthan helped bring her widespread recognition.
Patil died at a relatively young age. Some people have suggested that she had a sense that she would not live long, although Benegal said he did not know how much truth there was to these claims. He did, however, feel that she seemed to be in a hurry to accomplish a great deal in a limited amount of time.
Her death was deeply painful. She died a few days after complications arose during the birth of her child.
A Star Who Remained Grounded Despite Her Success
Despite being an actress, Patil maintained a simple lifestyle. Benegal said her parents never made her feel that she was someone extraordinary or entitled to special treatment.
Her father was a minister in Maharashtra, while her mother was a social worker. Nevertheless, both ensured that she continued to live and behave with simplicity.
Among her films, Benegal considered Bhumika particularly important because Patil portrayed characters belonging to different age groups. The performance was complex, demanding considerable versatility from the actress.
Her work received appreciation around the world. Following this recognition, a director from France also offered her a role, although Benegal did not identify the filmmaker by name.
Shyam Benegal Remembers Smita Patil’s Final Days
Benegal said he remained in contact with Patil during her final days because the hospital where she was admitted was close to his home.
Looking back on her life and career, he felt that she had left the world far too soon. He believed that had she lived for a few more years, she could have added many more outstanding films to her body of work.
For Benegal, Patil’s legacy rested not only on her expressive eyes and natural acting ability but also on her capacity to disappear into a character. His recollections also challenge the long-standing narrative of rivalry between Patil and Azmi, presenting their shared work as an example of the remarkable talent that defined their careers.
